Things to do in Ubud #1 – Monkey Forest

Our journey from London to Bali was a long one. Three flights and twenty-four hours later we touched down in Denpasar airport and were met by our driver who took us through the bustling streets, jam-packed with scooters, until we reached the edge of the city and joined winding roads through the jungle into the mountains of Ubud. We arrived in the evening and despite a real lack of sleep, our excitement made up for it and we set out to explore the town in the tropical heat, all covered up in mosquito spray of course!

After dinner and a few drinks, tiredness kicked in and we headed to bed in our cottage for an early night. The next morning we looked around in amazement at the gardens our hotel was set in – how tropical and green they were and how beautiful the arch. We enjoyed banana pancakes on our porch for breakfast and then headed off into town to do the first thing on our must-see list for Ubud –  Monkey Forest! It is a temple complex filled with greedy, grey-hair macaques who are wild but very used to humans!

At the entrance you can buy bananas which more than get their moneys worth with photos! You get a banana, hold it high above your head and wait for a monkey to come along, clamber up you and snatch it from your hands. I was just praying it wasn’t a huge one! The first few I tried were quickly snatched from my hands my ninja like monkeys who we couldn’t even snap a quick photo off but on my fourth attempt I got a friendly little guy who politely hung around just long enough 🙂

Other than just monkeys, the forest is filled with statues, temples and fountains to wander in and it is a beautiful walk. Despite it being Ubud’s main tourist attraction, the park never felt too busy and there were time we got to wander just the two of us.As you can tell from below we took an insane amount of photos –  the expressions on the monkeys’ faces were too irresistable!

Afterwards we headed to a great little place where we lazed on bean bags with iced lattes before an afternoon by the pool!
